The biggest problem for patients with intermediate to high risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer is the high recurrence rate (up to 70%) after surgery. Therefore these patients need to be treated with BCG infusion to prevent bladder tumor recurrence and progression, which is the drug of choice consistently recommended in major guidelines.
Recently, China Biotechnology Co., Ltd. and Beijing Aipu Cancer Patient Care Foundation jointly launched the “BCG Patient Assistance Program”, and our hospital became one of the first charity designated hospitals, and Associate Professor Zhu Yiping and Associate Professor Shen Yijun were appointed as the charity doctors of the program. At present, the program of BCG infusion treatment is 19 times for 1 year after surgery, which also brings a certain financial burden to patients. After this project is carried out, patients who meet the eligibility criteria can receive a total of 6 complimentary doses, which is equivalent to about 1/3 of the course of treatment can be infused for free, which greatly reduces the financial burden of patients and families and facilitates the development of treatment.
