Why do I need to do perfusion therapy after electrodesiccation for bladder cancer?

Bladder cancer is one of the common tumors of the male urinary system, most of which are superficial bladder cancers (more than 80%), and is usually treated surgically by TURBT (transurethral resection of bladder tumors). Since bladder tumors are prone to recurrence, it is also necessary to instill chemotherapeutic drug solution into the bladder via urethra after surgery, which can prevent tumor recurrence through the inhibitory effect of drugs; except for very few patients with very mild disease, most patients with bladder cancer who have undergone electrosurgery should have regular bladder instillation. After bladder tumor electrosurgery, patients need to have irrigation once a week for eight weeks, and once a month for ten months thereafter; in other words, patients need to have irrigation for 12 months in total, and the cost of treatment is about 15,000 RMB.

The most common form of instillation therapy is chemotherapy solutions such as epirubicin and pirarubicin, which are instilled through a catheter and then left in the bladder for half an hour to an hour before being expelled. Topical treatment by transurethral instillation of drugs maximizes the therapeutic effect of the drugs. The chemical drugs may have a good inhibitory effect on bladder tumors.

Patients must pay great attention to each instillation treatment and try not to miss it except for conditions such as urinary tract infection or other systemic infection-like diseases (e.g. fever, pneumonia) that cannot be done. It should be noted that perfusion therapy does not completely eliminate tumor recurrence, and patients also need to review cystoscopy every 3-6 months for close observation.
