Can I get two shots of rabies vaccine?

The rabies vaccine is administered according to the regular procedure, which generally requires five injections, given on days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28. If all of these doses are administered, the body’s immune system will be able to obtain sufficient levels of rabies antibodies to last for more than a year. If only two injections are given, it is likely that the corresponding antibody levels will not have reached a protective level by this time. Because the normal time to produce the appropriate rabies antibodies for the five injections is usually on day 7 or 14, only two injections, given only on days 0 and 3, generally do not yet produce effective protection in people. Therefore, there is little difference between only two shots of rabies vaccine and no rabies vaccine.
