Pregnant women infected with rubella virus baby damaged

On March 17, the son of Zhang Yun (pseudonym) was born only 8 hours ago and was found to be severely stunted in growth and was referred to Hubei Maternal and Child Health Hospital from Jiangxi. According to the receiving doctor, the child was 41 weeks + 6 days old, weighed only 2 kg, was severely anemic and had reduced platelets. Further examination revealed that the child was infected with rubella virus. The left eye had a congenital cataract and both children failed the hearing screening. Multiple organs, including the brain, heart and nervous system, were damaged. After treatment, although the vital signs were stable, the anemia was corrected, the platelets were normal, and the weight was increased, the intelligence and neurological damage could not reach the level of a normal child. The mother of the child said that she had not undergone eugenics-related examinations before pregnancy, nor had she undergone the required maternity examinations after pregnancy, and that she had a serious “cold” in early pregnancy. In fact, the serious “cold” she is referring to is a rubella virus infection with symptoms similar to the flu, which is not easily noticed and occurs in the spring and summer. When a pregnant woman is infected, the virus can pass through the blood-placental barrier and impair the development of fetal organs. Women who are planning to get pregnant should have their rubella virus antibodies measured 3 months before conception, and if there are any problems, they need to be treated and monitored under the guidance of a doctor before considering pregnancy. If the rubella virus is contracted in early pregnancy, abortion should be considered to avoid the birth of a defective baby.
