Atypical squamous cells ASC-US are squamous cells where the nature of the pathology is not clear. In patients with atypical squamous cells, further testing for human papillomavirus, or HPV testing, is needed to further determine what the next step in treatment should be. If the HPV test result is positive, in this case further colposcopy will be required and based on the colposcopy, a cervical biopsy will be taken if necessary and sent for pathology after the biopsy to determine the next step of treatment based on the pathology. If there are atypical squamous cells on TCT but no problems with HPV, in this case, a review after six months can be considered.
