One of the three most precious Chinese herbs, Cordyceps sinensis (the other two herbs are ginseng and deer antler, which have been described earlier), is known for its efficacy in tonifying the lungs and benefiting the kidneys. Because of the exact efficacy and the rarity of the species, the price has soared in recent years, becoming a dazzling “star” of the Chinese herb, and there are countless stories about Cordyceps healing and saving lives. The source of Cordyceps sinensis is a complex of the parasitic fungus Cordyceps sinensis on the larvae of the bat moth insect Batrachiaceae and the body of the larvae. Cordyceps has a particularly peculiar appearance, being a worm in winter but a grass in summer. In summer, the spores of a fungus called Cordyceps are mature and scattered, and then sprout into mycelium that burrows into the larvae of the bat moth, sucking nutrients from the larvae. The larvae of the moth hide in the soil, when the fungus grows many filaments called mycelium. As the larvae are sucked out of the nutrients in their bodies, they are left with stiff, empty shells, and of course cannot become manta moths. The following spring and summer, when the temperature and weather are suitable, the mycelium grows out of the larvae’s mouthparts and sticks out of the ground. The tip is slightly inflated and shaped like a rod, with many small spherical spores on the surface. Origin: Cordyceps is mainly produced in the alpine zone and snowy grasslands of Qinghai, Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu and Guizhou provinces and autonomous regions in mainland China.
