How to cure intractable thrombocytopenia with an integrated Chinese and Western approach?

Recently, Ms. Guan, a platelet reduction patient living in Xinhui Siqian Town, came to Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine for a follow-up consultation. When she and her husband saw that the platelet count on the routine blood test report was still stable above 100×109/L, they could not hide their inner joy and said repeatedly, “Thank you doctor for curing my disease! Thank you, thank you ……” It turns out that in August 2014, Ms. Guan suddenly developed large petechiae on her skin and mucous membranes, and the platelet count was found to be extremely low at 12×109/L in the local hospital, so Ms. Guan was sent to a hospital in Jiangmen by her family for treatment, and after perfecting the bone marrow and other related tests, she was clearly diagnosed with immune disorders. After completing bone marrow and other related tests, she was clearly diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), and was immediately treated with several platelet transfusions and high-dose hormone shock therapy, but the patient’s platelet count never rose, instead, she developed vaginal bleeding and severe anemia, and her condition became increasingly serious! When the patient’s family was in a difficult situation, Ms. Guan was referred to the Department of Hematology at Wuyi TCM by other patients who had recovered from thrombocytopenia. After receiving the patient, Dr. Zeng Yingjian and Dr. Fan Jiaxin immediately gave Ms. Guan gammaglobulin shock therapy due to her critical condition. The combination of Chinese and Western medicine has better advantages and entry points for this disease. After repeated discussions and detailed analysis, the Department of Hematology adjusted the immunomodulatory program for Ms. Guan in Western medicine, and in Chinese medicine, based on symptoms, signs, tongue and pulse, the overall diagnosis was a deficiency of qi and yin, deficiency of liver, spleen and kidney, and internal dampness and heat. On February 14, 2015, Ms. Guan’s platelet count reached 112×109/L, and her condition has been well controlled since then.    ITP is a common and frequent disease in hematology specialties. The disease is mainly manifested by bleeding from various parts of the body, and severe bleeding is easily life-threatening, especially in chronic refractory ITP because of its heavy condition and difficulty in taking effect, which poses great danger to patients. At present, this disease is an advantageous disease in the Department of Hematology of Wuyi Hospital. The Department has been able to adjust the immune status of patients through a comprehensive approach so that the disease can be well controlled and many patients who have not been cured elsewhere have recovered well in the Department.
