How to distinguish early and late stage of colon cancer

The determination of early and late stage of colon cancer mainly depends on two factors, 1. the depth of colon cancer invasion to the intestine, such as invasion to the mucosa or submucosa layer, intestinal muscle layer is early stage colon cancer, while if invasion to the plasma layer is locally advanced colon cancer. 2. lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis, if only peri-intestinal lymph node metastasis is locally advanced colon cancer, while if there are lung metastasis, liver metastasis or brain metastasis, it is locally advanced colon cancer. If there are lung metastasis, liver metastasis and brain metastasis, then it belongs to advanced colon cancer. Therefore, the early and late staging of colon cancer mainly depends on the depth of local invasion and distant metastasis of colon cancer, which is also called TNM staging method. Stage I and II are early stage colon cancer, while stage III and IV are late stage colon cancer. Once lymph node metastasis occurs, it is stage III colon cancer; lung, liver and brain metastasis are stage IV colon cancer, while all others are stage I and II colon cancer.
