What are the preparations and precautions before gastroscopy?

Preparations and precautions before gastroscopy are usually categorized into dietary contraindications, prohibition of smoking, and information confirmation.
1. Dietary contraindications: Diet should be light within 2~3 days before the examination, avoiding spicy, greasy and other stimulating foods. The night before the examination should be fasting and water fasting for more than 6 hours from 9 o’clock.
2. Prohibition of medication: It is best not to take medication on the day of the examination, except for the usual high blood pressure medication, for which you should consult your doctor.
3. Prohibition of smoking: Smoking should be prohibited the day before the gastroscopy so as to avoid coughing caused by smoking, which may affect the intubation.
4. Confirmation of information: you need to sign an informed consent form; patients who are allergic to anesthetics such as propofol, lidocaine, etc. must tell the doctor in advance; patients with hypertension, heart disease and other acute and chronic diseases should consult the doctor before the examination and use the relevant medications in accordance with the doctor’s instructions; patients with a history of other infectious diseases should also be informed in detail.
5. Improve the preoperative examination:
(1) Infectious markers should be examined, such as hepatitis C, hepatitis B, syphilis and AIDS, to avoid cross-infection during the examination.
(2) Electrocardiogram should be conducted to clarify the presence of arrhythmia, myocardial ischemia and myocardial infarction and other diseases.
(3) Blood pressure should be checked to see if it is within the normal range. If there is any abnormality in blood pressure, antihypertensive drug treatment should be taken as prescribed by the doctor. When the blood pressure returns to the normal range, then gastroscopy should be performed.
(4) Coagulation function examination should be carried out, and anticoagulants should be stopped before gastroscopy. Patients taking anticoagulants or with abnormal coagulation function can not undergo endoscopic biopsy, polypectomy and other treatments.
(5) Gastroscopy needs to take antifoaming agents and local anesthetics before examination. An informed consent for anesthesia has to be signed for painless gastroscopy.
Before gastroscopy, it is recommended to follow the doctor’s instructions for relevant preparations and to know the specific precautions.
