What are the advantages of minimally invasive lumpectomy?

Recently, a bride-to-be in the suburbs unintentionally found a quail’s egg-sized “lump” on her right side of the neck, and the ultrasound examination at the local hospital revealed that it was a thyroid nodule, and the doctor recommended her to have it removed surgically. After a friend introduced her to the thyroid surgery department at Lee Wai Lee Hospital, the doctor removed the “lump” through a “roundabout tactic” – a minimally invasive lumpectomy – in her right axilla. “She was discharged from the hospital on the third day after surgery without any surgical marks on her neck, which made her very satisfied. The term “detour” is a military term that means to avoid the enemy’s frontal attack and detour to its flank. There are numerous examples of successful use of this tactic in military history. Minimally invasive thyroid surgery is similar in that instead of cutting at the site where the thyroid gland is located, the procedure is performed by cutting a small 0.5-1.0 cm incision along the skin line, making a tunnel in the direction of the thyroid gland, inserting a lumpectomy instrument, and removing the thyroid mass and gland. Compared to traditional thyroid surgery, the neck is aesthetically pleasing without leaving a 4-6 cm long horizontal incision scar. Moreover, this technique, with the magnification effect of the lumpectomy, can clearly present the extremely delicate anatomical structures to the surgeon, thus making the surgery more delicate, safe and thorough. The conventional lumpectomy approach to thyroid surgery is mainly through the areola of the chest, but for some patients with higher cosmetic requirements, the axillary approach with better cosmetic results can be chosen, and even thyroid surgery can be performed through the floor of the mouth or the vestibule of the mouth, so that both medical and cosmetic treatment can be achieved.
