Bone aspiration is bone marrow aspiration, which is a commonly used medical treatment. It is performed by extracting bone marrow fluid from a selected area of the body under local anesthesia and performing a smear test. It is mainly used to diagnose diseases and to evaluate their effectiveness during treatment. The common sites for bone marrow aspiration are the anterior superior iliac spine, the posterior superior iliac spine, and the sternal stalk, and occasionally the spinous process of the lumbar spine. Bone marrow aspiration is generally free of sequelae and is minimally invasive, with only minor local damage, and can be fully recovered after a few days of rest.
