How to check for vocal cord nodules

The examination of vocal cord nodules mainly includes laryngoscopy, narrow band imaging technique, electroacoustic portography, laryngeal notation waveform, objective voice examination, and subjective assessment. 1. Laryngoscopy: Dynamic laryngoscopy is one of the most important methods to diagnose vocal cord nodules. Under dynamic laryngoscopy, vocal cord nodules can be seen: symmetrical elevation of the mucosa in the anterior and middle third of the vocal cords bilaterally, with phlegm adhering to the surface. 2. Narrow band imaging: benign hyperplastic lesions can appear reddish in narrow band imaging, which can distinguish the abnormal tissues and parts of the larynx. 3. Electroacoustic gating: The waveforms of the electroacoustic gating can be used to understand the vibration, movement and lesions of the vocal folds. Vocal fold nodules can cause incomplete closure of the vocal folds, which is characterized by shortening of the closed phase and lengthening of the open phase. 4. Laryngeal waveform: it can reflect the vibration of vocal folds within 4s. 5. Objective voice examination: voice acoustic analysis through voice acoustic software, which is an auxiliary tool for vocal fold nodules and is suitable for postoperative follow-up patients. 6. Subjective assessment: This includes self-assessment of voice disorders and subjective assessment by experts, reflecting the patient’s satisfaction with his/her own voice, as well as the patient’s degree of vocal fold closure and vibration. Not all tests are necessary, but mainly due to the doctor’s judgment of what kind of tests should be carried out according to the patient’s vocal fold nodule condition.
