What’s the matter with the pulse you feel when you’re lying on your side?

Side lying pulse may be physiological phenomenon, may also be caused by pathological factors, such as hypertension, aortic valve insufficiency, arrhythmia and so on.
1. Physiological phenomenon: when lying on the side, the blood vessels on one side may be compressed, and the carotid artery is one of the strongest pulsations, so it is normal to feel a strong pulse at this time, and it will not be obvious after changing the lying position.
2. Pathologic factors:
(1) Hypertension: when the patient’s blood pressure is too high, it makes the blood vessels dilate, and when he lies on his side, he will also feel the obvious pulse beat.
(2) Aortic valve insufficiency: patients with aortic valve insufficiency can have nodding sign (head bobbing with the heartbeat), water rushing pulse (pulse rises and falls as if the tide is rising and falling), and so on, therefore, pulse beats will also be felt when lying on the side.
(3) Arrhythmia: In cases of ventricular tachycardia and supraventricular tachycardia, the patient may feel an abnormal pulse in a quiet state.
It is recommended to exclude the possibility of physiological factors, and then consult a doctor in a timely manner, under the guidance of a professional physician, to avoid delaying the condition.
