Can kidney cysts cause proteinuria?

Kidney cysts may cause proteinuria.
Smaller renal cysts usually do not have obvious symptoms, and are often detected incidentally when imaging tests such as ultrasound are performed. In some patients, an abdominal mass may be detected (more common in pediatric patients, mostly in larger cysts in the lower pole of the kidney). If the patient has symptoms, the most common is coeliac pain, which can be caused by larger cysts pulling on the renal peritoneum or compressing the renal parenchyma, or due to cyst hemorrhage, infection, and so on.
Some patients with renal cysts present with hematuria and microproteinuria, both of which are independent of the size of the cyst. For those who are asymptomatic and have no complications, generally no treatment is needed and can be rechecked once every six months to a year. Symptomatic treatment includes controlling blood pressure, preventing cyst infection, rupture and bleeding.
Patients with renal cysts should go to the hospital in time and be treated under the guidance of professional physicians.
