A glial cyst is a cystic disease that results from the proliferation of glial cells with cystic degeneration, most commonly thyroglial cysts. Gliocysts are a pathologic diagnosis that can be visualized as a cystic space on magnetic resonance imaging. Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the space, and some patients may not have typical clinical manifestations, such as headaches, seizures, and vomiting, which may be the baseline symptom for thyroglossal cysts. Surgical resection can be performed after the diagnosis is made, and the postoperative pathology is usually characterized by glial cell hyperplasia with localized cystic changes. After surgical resection, patients are advised to go to the hospital for regular checkups.
