Flavomycin, also known as ashwagandin, is the main component of ashwagandin. It is isolated from the culture filtrate of Penicillium griseofulvin and its antifungal mechanism is not yet clear. It is effective against dermatophytes but not yeast and bacteria. Ashwagandha is indicated for the treatment of various ringworm diseases, including ringworm of the head, ringworm of the beard, ringworm of the body, ringworm of the femur, ringworm of the feet and ringworm of the nail. The aforementioned ringworm is caused by Tinea crimsonis, Tinea interruptus, Tinea beard, and Tinea interna, as well as Microsporum orduanum, Microsporum canis, Microsporum plasterum and Flocculina epidermidis. Ashwagandha is ineffective against infections of Candida spp, Histoplasma spp, Actinomyces spp, Sporotrichum spp, Bacillus spp, Coccidioides spp, Nocardia spp and Cryptococcus spp, as well as ringworm.
