Eye flashes appear mainly after sports or in a relatively dark environment where the eye can see a discharge or lightning bolt. This condition is associated with degeneration of the vitreous body, which pulls on the retina. As we age or as myopia increases, the vitreous degenerates and some of the jelly-like vitreous degenerates and liquefies, becoming aqueous. This condition tends to occur in middle-aged people, or people with high myopia, and is accompanied by a pulling of the retina by the vitreous body, i.e., after each shake of the head or movement, the jarring of the vitreous body will increase, and the increased jarring will cause the pulling of the retina to increase. Each pull on the retina is a sensation of abnormal discharge, similar to the sensation of flashing or lightning in front of the eyes. In this case, it is necessary to go to the hospital and have a fundus examination to rule out retinal fissures. If there is a fissure, early laser treatment is needed to prevent retinal detachment.
