Mumps in children is an acute infectious disease of the respiratory tract caused by mumps virus infection. The main clinical feature is pain in the parotid area. The main population groups are children and adolescents. In addition to the parotid gland, the mumps virus can also invade the nervous system and other glandular tissues causing meningitis, orchitis, ovarian inflammation and pancreatitis. For the treatment of mumps, the first thing to do is to take bed rest, eat a liquid diet, avoid acidic beverages, maintain oral hygiene, and make sure to rinse your mouth with saline after meals. The clinical manifestations, such as headache and fever, should be treated symptomatically. For mumps virus, you can use some antiviral drugs, such as try ribavirin, which has a better antiviral effect and can shorten the course of the disease and reduce the symptoms. In some severe cases or in patients with meningitis, adrenocorticosteroids can be considered for short-term use. For other complications, such as intracranial hypertension, the use of mannitol can be considered, and if testicular inflammation occurs, attention should be paid to local cold compresses to prevent future fertility problems. Most children with mumps can be effectively cured with active treatment.
