Lung cancer is lucky to be able to have surgery

Lung cancer is lucky to be able to have surgery! In outpatient clinics, we always encounter this kind of question, patients and family members always ask, “Doctor, can we do it without surgery? Isn’t chemotherapy and radiotherapy also able to cure lung cancer? I heard there are also immunotherapy and biotherapy.” And so on and so forth, and every time I answer a question, another question comes up, and I have to talk about it. Why should surgery be recommended when lung cancer is found? The answer is very simple. Surgery is recommended because it is the only way to cure lung cancer. That is, surgery is the only possible cure for lung cancer. Of all newly discovered lung cancers, only about 20%, have a chance of surgery! The other 80%, once discovered, are already advanced and have no chance of surgery. Only lung cancer cases that are surgically resected have a chance of being cured and have a 5-year survival rate as a statistical indicator, while inoperable lung cancer does not even have a 5-year survival rate. Therefore, lung cancer is lucky to have surgery!
