Where the parotid ducts open

The parotid duct opens in the buccal mucosa opposite the buccal surface of the crown of the maxillary second molar. The parotid duct emanates from the superficial anterior border of the parotid gland, exits the parotid sheath at the inferior border of the zygomatic arch, then travels anteriorly in the superficial occlusal fascia of the parotid gland, passes inwardly through the buccinator muscle at almost a right angle at the anterior border of the occlusal muscle, and ultimately opens into the buccal mucous membrane on the buccal side opposite to the crown of the second molar of the maxilla. The mucosa at the opening of the parotid duct is slightly elevated and is called the parotid papilla, which can be felt by the patient with the tip of the tongue. During oral examination, squeezing the parotid gland can see saliva overflow from the opening of the parotid duct. When the parotid gland is inflamed, the opening of the parotid duct is often red and swollen, and inflammatory secretions can be seen overflow when squeezed.
