Difference between vestibular dysfunction and otolithiasis

Vestibular dysfunction and otolithiasis both cause dizziness, but there are obvious differences between the two in terms of definition, etiology and clinical symptoms. 1. Different definitions: Vestibular dysfunction refers to a series of symptoms of vestibular dysfunction caused by the abnormalities of the balloon, elliptic capsule, semicircular canals and other structures in the vestibular system. Otolithiasis refers to the peripheral vestibular pathology which is characterized by recurrent episodes of transient vertigo and characteristic nystagmus induced by changes in head position. 2. Different etiology: Vestibular dysfunction is often caused by external sound stimulation, vestibular system diseases, ear canal diseases and other factors, while otolithiasis has no clear etiology and can be secondary to cranial trauma, viral neuritis, otitis media and other diseases. 3. Different clinical symptoms: Otolithiasis can cause rotational vertigo when the head is in a certain position, but the duration is shorter, often lasting about one minute, and can be repeated. Vestibular dysfunction will appear more persistent dizziness, vomiting, nystagmus, balance disorders, gait abnormalities and other symptoms. When dizziness occurs, it is recommended to consult a doctor in time to clarify the cause of the disease through relevant examinations and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment. Avoid self-judgment and treatment.
