The moment the ankle ligament ruptures it feels very painful, generally like a tearing sensation. At the same time, a snap is heard at the moment of the ligament rupture. In other cases of ligament rupture, the ankle joint may feel unstable, weak and not as flexible as usual. An MRI can confirm which ligament is torn and determine the next step of treatment based on the test results. If the ligament is strained or partially torn, conservative treatment with brace or cast immobilization for 3-6 weeks is recommended. If the ligament is completely ruptured and the ankle joint is unstable, surgery is recommended and postoperative bracing or cast is recommended for 6-8 weeks.
