Is plaque in the arteries of the lower extremities serious?

With the improvement of people’s living standards, the incidence of atherosclerotic plaques in the lower extremities is increasing and deserves attention. The early symptoms of atherosclerotic plaque in the lower extremities may only be the chilliness of the lower extremities, or even no clinical symptoms. With the development of the disease, the patient may experience weakness after lower limb activities, called intermittent claudication, and the symptoms will continue to worsen, or even pain in the lower limbs after walking a few hundred meters, which can be relieved after rest, hence the name intermittent claudication. If the condition develops further, resting pain will appear, called resting pain, and this symptom is characterized by worsening at night and relieving in the morning. With further development of the disease, there is a possibility of local ischemic symptoms, local gangrene of the limb, infection, and even persistent pain, which is very painful for patients and can be amputated in severe cases. Therefore, atherosclerosis of the lower limbs must be diagnosed and treated early to control it in the bud.
