What should I do if my eyes are red after congenital cataract surgery?

Surgery for congenital cataracts is minimally invasive, with incisions typically less than 3 mm. The eyes of small patients are covered with gauze after surgery to facilitate rest and cleanliness of the eyes after surgery. The doctor opens the eye shield the day after surgery to check the condition, after which the shield is no longer in place. Because long-term covering can artificially prevent the child from seeing and artificially cause amblyopia, it is important to let the child see the outside world as early as possible to stimulate the retina and promote is functional repair. During a child’s post-operative recovery process, different reactions can occur. Why exactly do these manifestations occur? Do I need to go to the hospital to have my doctor check? First of all, parents should take good care of their children after surgery and try to reduce their discomfort. Avoid rubbing the child’s eyes after surgery, wipe the child’s face with a towel every day, and the medical staff will do the cleaning around the child’s eyes during the hospitalization, which will be done by the parents after discharge home. However, if you want to wash your child’s face as normal, it is generally recommended to wait until three weeks after the surgery, when the child’s condition is basically stable. In addition, it is important for the child to avoid looking directly at strong external light, especially after surgery when the pupils are dilated, and to avoid light when the pupils are dilated. Why do children cry and have red eyes? If your child continues to cry after surgery even though parents have taken great care of him or her, there are generally three reasons. 1. It may be a reaction to general anesthesia after surgery, because the fasting time of water is particularly long, the child is hungry and irritable, as well as different reactions to anesthetic drugs. 2, the child’s eyes are not comfortable after surgery, the stimulation of surgery makes the child’s eyes have a little grinding pain, two or three days later will be better. 3, after the surgery, the child’s eye pressure rises, the damage to the corneal epithelium and the inflammatory reaction in the eye cause pain, and the child cries and dares not open his eyes. Therefore, it is important for parents to observe carefully after surgery, and children should notify the doctor of any uncomfortable symptoms and be examined and treated as early as possible. Some parents report that their child’s eyes are red after surgery, which is usually caused by both surgery and drug stimulation. If the doctor determines that there is no problem after the examination, it will gradually improve and normal use of eye drops will be sufficient. If the eye redness is caused by medication irritation, it will gradually ease after stopping the medication. Surgical reactions, with the continuous adjustment of the medication ordered, the condition can generally be basically stabilized within 3-4 weeks, if it is still not good, you need to go to the hospital for a checkup. Why do children blink and tear frequently? Some children always blink and squint frequently after coming home. Parents need to take their children to the hospital for an examination to detect changes in their condition as early as possible. It is important to stop the child from rubbing his or her eyes because rubbing the eyes increases the chance of infection. Parents should also be alert if their child keeps tearing after surgery, which may be caused by elevated eye pressure. How can I see if my child’s eye pressure is high? Children are different from adults. Adults can tell if they are uncomfortable, but children can’t. It’s up to parents to observe and review their children regularly. If a child’s eye pressure is elevated, some of them will have painful eye rubbing and do not like to open their eyes, accompanied by tearing; in addition, parents can take a look at their child’s cornea with a flashlight when they are sleeping, if the cornea is like a layer of glass with water vapor, it is not normal, and it is best to go to the hospital for examination. It is important to note that if the child is using hormonal eye drops after surgery, the child’s IOP must also be observed, as the medication may also cause an increase in IOP, which should be gradually discontinued under the doctor’s guidance or with the addition of IOP-lowering medication.
