Redness of the eyes is not a unique symptom, but can occur in all five organs: heart, liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys. Redness of the eyes is mainly attributed to the liver, which can be caused by excessive liver fire or deficiency of liver yin and liver blood, and is also related to heart fire, stomach fire, lung fire and kidney yin deficiency.
The eye can be divided into five parts: the eyelid, the corner of the eye, the white of the eye, the black eye and the pupil. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, the liver opens the orifices in the eyes, eye abnormalities mainly belong to the liver problems, liver fire, fire and heat in the eyes, or liver yin, liver blood insufficiency, the eyes lose moistening, then the symptoms of eye redness will appear. For example, the black eyeballs red, mainly belong to the liver fire.
In addition, the corners of the eyes also belong to the heart, heart fire, inflammation in the eyes, there will be the corners of the eyes, such as the inner canthus, the outer canthus red; eyelids belong to the spleen, spleen deficiency, dampness and heat or gastric fire, there will be the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids red; white of the eyes belongs to the lungs, lungs meridian fire, there will be the white of the eyes red; pupil belongs to the kidneys, if kidney yin deficiency, deficiency of fire inflammation or dampness and heat in the lower Jiao, there will be the pupil red.
Therefore, the redness of the eyes should be specifically differentiated from the parts, but also depends on the heart, liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys of the concomitant symptoms. When discomfort occurs, prompt medical attention is recommended.
