Erythromycin ointment is a macrolide antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drug, which is mainly used for local bacterial infections, like folliculitis, etc. It is not generally used for the treatment of blemishes. However, erythromycin ointment can prevent the pigmentation produced after inflammation, and can also play the role of spot removal. For example, when facial dermatitis and eczema have exudation, erythromycin ointment can be applied topically, and the pigmentation spots caused by inflammation will be significantly reduced after the inflammation is controlled. For chloasma or age spots, erythromycin ointment has no effect on removing the spots, and can be treated with topical hydroquinone cream or retinoic acid ointment. Also avoid sunlight as much as possible, because sunlight can aggravate this kind of rash.
