Dendrobium Officinale Functions and Uses

The effect of dendrobium is to nourish yin and clear heat, benefit the stomach and produce fluids; the effect of American ginseng is to tonify qi and nourish yin, clear heat and produce fluids. The two can be decocted or soaked in water to drink.
Dendrobium is sweet in taste, slightly cold in nature, and belongs to the stomach and kidney meridians. Dendrobium has the effect of benefiting the stomach, nourishing yin and clearing heat. It is used for heat illness with fluid injury, dry mouth and thirst, deficiency of gastric yin (insufficient yin fluid in the stomach), dry vomiting with little food, deficiency of heat that does not go away after illness, yin deficiency and fire, bone vapor and labor heat, dark and unclear vision, and impotence of sinews and bones.
Radix Panax Ginseng is sweet, slightly bitter, cool in nature, and belongs to the heart, lung and kidney meridians. It has the effect of tonifying qi and nourishing yin, clearing heat and promoting generation of body fluid. It is used in treating qi deficiency and yin deficiency, deficiency heat and tiredness, coughing and wheezing, phlegm and blood, internal heat and thirst (internal heat accompanied by symptoms such as eating, drinking and urinating), and dryness of mouth and pharynx. It is not suitable to be used with Veratrum.
Dendrobium and Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng are medicinal herbs that can be decocted or infused into water. Adverse effects of both are not clear. If there is a need for medication, it is recommended to use them under the guidance of a professional physician, not blindly self-medication.
