How to deal with a newborn’s bleeding belly button

Newborn bleeding from the umbilical cord may be caused by incorrect or insecure ligation of the umbilical cord, infection leading to edema and bleeding, coagulation disorders, etc. Interventions can be made through re-ligation, medication, and other means. 1. Wrong or insecure umbilical cord ligation: the ligature line is loosened due to insecure knotting, the arteries and veins of the umbilical cord are not completely occluded, plus the umbilical cord rubbing against diapers and clothes may easily lead to bleeding; the cord should be re-tied immediately and the amount of bleeding assessed; if the amount of bleeding is large or symptoms such as whitening of the mouth and lips and coldness of the limbs occur, rehydration fluids should be provided immediately and monitoring of vital signs should be carried out. 2. Bleeding due to edema caused by infection: edema of the umbilical cord caused by infection can lead to local edema causing wound bleeding, which needs to be cleaned and bandaged, and at the same time, erythromycin ointment can be used externally for local disinfection, and the bleeding can be stopped by itself when it is scabbed. 3. Coagulation disorders: coagulation disorders such as hemophilia, vitamin K1 deficiency and other causes, can improve coagulation function through transfusion of coagulation factors, vitamin K1, etc., to promote blood clotting. Newborn bleeding from the navel is more dangerous, massive bleeding can lead to life-threatening hemorrhagic shock, must be disposed of immediately; the above drugs need to be used under the guidance of clinicians, unauthorized use of medication is prohibited.
