Taking metformin does not usually cause elevated white blood cells on a urine test.
The main mechanism of action of metformin is to inhibit hepatic glucose output and to improve the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin, increasing glucose uptake and utilization, thus lowering blood glucose. Metformin may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypoglycemia, rash, dizziness, hives and other adverse reactions, generally does not cause urine leukocyte elevation.
Urine leukocyte elevation is considered to be pyelonephritis, urethritis, cystitis and other diseases, and diabetic patients are more prone to infections, resulting in elevated urine leukocytes.
Diabetic patients with elevated urine leukocytes are advised to go to the hospital and ask the doctor to make a judgment.
