Wisdom teeth are not always extracted by cutting the gums. In the case of wisdom teeth that are in good clinical condition, they may elongate because of the absence of the corresponding opposing tooth. This type of wisdom tooth is also recommended to be extracted in order to prevent its elongation from biting into the opposite gum. This type of wisdom tooth does not require gum removal at all, but can be removed by loosening the wisdom tooth with a dental pliers. However, there are many obstructive wisdom teeth in the clinic that have poor eruption or fail to erupt due to soft or hard tissue obstruction. If the gums are not removed, there is no way for the wisdom teeth to be dislodged from their normal position.
