Rectal finger examination is a simple, easy and important anal examination method that can be used to screen for rectal cancer, rectal polyps, internal hemorrhoids, anal fistulas, anal fissures, perianorectal abscesses and many other diseases, and can also screen for prostate disease in men (prostate cancer, prostate enlargement). The rectum in adults is usually 15 cm long and cannot be felt above 8 cm, but can be felt by hand below 8 cm. More than half of the colorectal cancer patients in China are rectal cancer. Among rectal cancer patients, about 70% of them are in turn low to medium rectal cancer. In other words, 70% of rectal cancers and one-third of colorectal cancers can be palpated by rectal finger examination. If dark red blood is found on the finger sleeve, it may indicate bleeding in the intestine and further colonoscopy is needed. 1.How to examine? Doctors with gloves coated with lubricant and perform direct finger palpation of the lower section of the rectum, which can determine whether the rectal wall is smooth, whether there are neoplasms and bleeding, etc. If dark red blood is found stuck on the gloves it can suggest that there are polyps or tumors bleeding in the large intestine. If a purulent discharge is found and no abnormalities are felt in the rectal wall, it suggests that the site of our lesion is deeper and further colonoscopy is required to determine. 2.What preparations should be made before the examination? The main thing is to relax and take a deep breath during the rectal examination, which will help the doctor to do a thorough examination. 3.How does it feel? During the examination, there may be a slight discomfort, relax and breathe deeply to relieve the discomfort. 4.Does it mean that I can rest easy if the rectal examination is fine? Rectal examination is a basic tool for preliminary screening of intestinal cancer. For general population, annual fecal occult blood test and rectal examination are routine, and further colonoscopy can be done if there is any abnormality; for high-risk people (family history of intestinal cancer, history of ulcerative colitis, etc.), they should insist on colon cancer screening and attach importance to colonoscopy, and should not delay the detection of disease without examination. The existing routine physical examination items, which are formulated through a large number of epidemiological surveys, screen for multiple diseases and common diseases, and each item has its important role. Although colonoscopy is the most favorable means to detect colorectal cancer and precancerous colorectal lesions, China has a large population and it is impossible for everyone to go for colonoscopy, while the other side of the national status quo is that the incidence of colorectal cancer is increasing in China, so the simple examination method of rectal finger diagnosis is suitable for the screening of colorectal cancer, especially low rectal cancer. It can check whether the rectal wall is smooth, whether there are neoplasms (most rectal cancers are caused by malignant transformation of rectal polyps), whether there is bleeding, etc. In addition, dark red blood can often be found for some tumor bleeding in the large intestine during rectal examination.
