What is extraocular muscle paralysis?

Extraocular muscle palsy is a muscle movement disorder caused by abnormalities in the nerves innervating the muscle. The main causes are hypertension, diabetes, inflammatory infections, tumor compression, or ocular trauma. After extraocular muscle palsy, ptosis, decreased vision, dilated pupils, eye movement disorders, and strabismus may occur. In the initial stage of extraocular muscle palsy, active pharmacological treatment is required, mainly to improve microcirculation and nerve nutrition therapy. After about 6 months of conservative treatment, if the symptoms of ptosis and strabismus do not heal or improve, surgical treatment with ptosis correction or strabismus correction is recommended to correct the strabismus or ptosis.
