When you have ear pain after wearing headphones for a long time, the first thing you need to do is to stop wearing headphones immediately. Because headphones are irritating to the skin of the external ear canal, they may induce otitis externa and may cause the skin of the external ear canal to break down and become painful. In some patients, the pain can be relieved on its own after the headphones are stopped. If the pain does not resolve, the patient needs to be seen by an otolaryngologist immediately. An endoscopic examination of the external ear canal can help clarify the condition of the external ear canal, as well as the presence of periosteal damage or acute otitis media. If infection and inflammation have occurred, medication is needed. Currently, antibiotics are more commonly used and oral medication is the main treatment. Some patients can also be treated with ear baths with ear drops, and regular follow-ups are needed to observe the effects of treatment.
