Schizophrenia is a chronic, relapse-prone, severe mental illness that has a serious impact on social functioning and requires regular medication even after symptoms have resolved or disappeared. The duration of medication varies depending on the episode. Patients who have a first episode need to take medication regularly for two years after their symptoms have completely disappeared or remitted. If there is a history of multiple episodes or frequent recurrent episodes, the patient will need to take medication for the rest of his or her life. Because each episode of schizophrenia can have some damage or impact on the brain, maintenance and consolidation therapy is extremely important and needs to be taken seriously by the patient. During the maintenance period, the medication used can be adjusted to the minimum maintenance dose to prevent relapse of schizophrenia.
