A jumping sensation in the belly during late pregnancy may be a symptom caused by the fetal baby hiccups in the mother’s uterus. The hiccups may or may not occur when the baby is in the mother’s uterus starting at 28 weeks of pregnancy. The hiccups occur when the baby swallows amniotic fluid. If the baby’s gastrointestinal tract is well developed, there are usually no obvious hiccups. When the gastrointestinal tract is not very well developed, hiccups will occur. The essence of hiccups is caused by spasm of the diaphragm, and the baby can promote the development of alveoli during the process of hiccups. The hiccups are usually very regular and may occur 2-3 times a day, lasting for about 5 minutes each time. The pregnant mother can clearly feel the hiccups as a jumping sensation in the abdominal wall, similar to a heartbeat.
