Does Acupuncture Work for Coughs

If the cough is caused by qi deficiency, yang deficiency, or phlegm-dampness, it can be treated with moxibustion. If the cough is caused by inhalation of foreign bodies or mental stress, moxibustion is not very useful. Coughs caused by qi deficiency are characterized by a low, weak cough, shortness of breath, sputum, fatigue, fear of wind, spontaneous sweating (involuntary sweating during the daytime, aggravated by sweating when you move a little), and a tendency to catch colds. Selected points are mainly Lung Yu, Spleen Yu, Kidney Yu, Qihai and Fenglong. Yang deficiency cough is caused by cold, sputum and saliva, dizziness, palpitation (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), fear of cold, heaviness of the limbs, or urinary dyspareunia (unruly urination). Selected acupoints are mainly Life Gate, Guanyuan, Kidney Yu, Anointing Yu, Shenque and Lung Yu. Cough with phlegm-dampness is characterized by heavy coughing, phlegm rumbling in the throat, phlegm with a lot of white sputum, accompanied by tightness in the chest and epigastric region, reduced appetite, and weakness in the limbs. The main acupuncture points are Lung Yu, Spleen Yu, Taiyuan, Fenglong and Hegu. If the patient is eating too fast caused by foreign body inhalation, or mental overstress, agitation and other reasons for coughing, this situation moxibustion usually does not have much effect, inhalation of foreign bodies, need to immediately use the Heimlich maneuver to save or go to the hospital for treatment.
