Insomnia does not cause stomach discomfort, but because of sleep disorders, early awakening or difficulty in falling asleep causing mood changes, patients may experience anxiety or somatization symptoms, which may manifest as stomach discomfort such as heartburn, reflux, burping, belching, or in some cases, stomach fullness and discomfort with pain. In some cases, the stomach discomfort may worsen at night, so insomnia does not directly cause stomach discomfort. However, if somatization disorder is caused by insomnia, patients will have stomach discomfort and need symptomatic treatment with medications that regulate neurological function.
