Let acupuncture solve the “face” problem

Facial palsy is a common and frequent clinical disease, especially in winter and spring. Because it involves the “face” problem, it is very important and stressful for patients and their families. According to the data from the China Facial Nerve Disease Research Center, the prevalence of facial palsy in China is 4.31-5.83%, and in recent years, the incidence of the disease has been on a high trend. And some data show that if facial palsy does not receive timely and standardized diagnosis and treatment, 22.6% of patients will have sequelae, such as eye-lip linkage, frontal muscle spasm, facial twitching, muscle tightening, upper lip spasm, etc. Some of them may even cause psychological problems. This shows that the problem of “face” should not be ignored. So, how to treat this important “face” problem? Can acupuncture be used to treat it? This is not only a question for patients and ordinary people, but also a long-standing controversy among our medical colleagues. The reason why Western medicine does not recommend acupuncture is that many acupuncturists (or many can not be called acupuncturists at all, they know little about acupuncture, only “pain points” to treat diseases, where the discomfort is stabbed) is not good understanding of the disease, not according to the condition of the control of acupuncture techniques and stimulation, so many patients treatment The effect is not very satisfactory, so that other colleagues feel that acupuncture is useless or acupuncture treatment will be counterproductive. As for the so-called “doctors” in some small clinics who say that “acupuncture will break the nerves”, it is pure nonsense. Acupuncture can treat facial palsy, and the effect is quite good. If acupuncture is used in the early stage of treatment, it can also reduce the use of hormones. According to traditional Chinese medicine, facial palsy is caused by the lack of positive energy in the body and the emptiness of the veins and collaterals, so the wind evil takes advantage of the deficiency and enters the meridians. From the perspective of Chinese medicine, whether the facial paralysis is caused by wind-cold or wind-heat, the root cause is that the patient’s own positive qi is weak and the veins and meridians are empty, resulting in the inability of qi and blood to run normally, causing the facial muscle to lose nourishment. The technique of acupuncture and moxibustion is to regulate and unblock the meridians by “supplementing the deficiency and draining the excess”, so that the patient’s qi and blood can be balanced and run normally, moistening the affected facial muscles and nerves for gradual recovery. Their experience tells us that acupuncture is an effective means of treating facial palsy, and for this reason, acupuncture has long been written into the treatment guidelines for facial palsy. In the past 20 years of clinical work, I have found that acupuncture is an effective treatment for facial palsy, especially in recent years, with the continuous improvement of people’s living standard, people pay more attention to their health and quality of life, and acupuncture, which is easy to operate, fast-acting and has no toxic side effects, is especially respected by people. Acupuncture has incomparable advantages in the treatment of nerve injuries and muscle paralysis, and the earlier the intervention, the better the effect and the shorter the course of treatment. As one of the effective means of treating peripheral facial nerve palsy, acupuncture has been widely used in clinical practice and accepted by the majority of patients, but when to intervene in treatment has been debated and inconsistently understood by medical practitioners for many generations. According to the etiology and mechanism of the disease and the principle of Chinese medicine treatment of “prevention before illness and prevention after illness”, I believe that the best time to intervene in the treatment of peripheral facial palsy is in the acute stage (progressive stage), and the earlier the time, the better the efficacy, the shorter the course of treatment, and the higher the cure rate. The facial nerve is in the acute inflammatory edema stage, and the myelin sheath or axon has different degrees of degeneration and is in the inter-ecological stage. If a very weak benign stimulation can be given to the local acupuncture points at this time, it not only does not hurt the positive energy, but also can unblock the meridians, stimulate the meridian qi, harmonize the qi and blood, which can excite the nerves, enhance the contraction of muscle fibers, accelerate blood circulation, increase metabolism, and enable the absorption of inflammatory exudates. This will improve the transmission of nerve impulses, promote the regeneration of nerve fibers, and restore the function of nerves that govern muscle contraction. Therefore, once the disease is detected, it must be treated with acupuncture early, and should not wait and let it develop, so as not to delay the disease. In this way, the course of treatment can be shortened, the cure rate can be increased, and the patient’s pain can be reduced and the economic burden of the patient can be alleviated. Of course, the initial recuperation of facial paralysis is also important. The first is to pay attention to rest, that is, the patient should first ensure sufficient rest time, try to stay up late and work overtime, to prevent body labor, heart labor, room labor; the second is to pay attention to warmth, that is, the affected side should try not to get cold, try to reduce the morning and evening to go out, go out with a mask or hat; the third is to pay attention to diet, avoid eating cold, spicy and stimulating things, avoid smoking and alcohol. If these three points are not done well, it will seriously affect the treatment and prognosis and prolong the course of treatment. Moreover, the above precautions should be implemented throughout the treatment process of facial palsy, especially at the early stage is more important.
