Swollen eyes with “eye boogers” are a result of inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is divided into acute conjunctivitis and chronic conjunctivitis. Acute conjunctivitis, also known as “pink eye”, is caused by bacterial or viral infection. Acute conjunctivitis has an acute onset, with swollen eyes, red eyes, burning and painful symptoms, and a very large amount of mucopurulent secretions, commonly known as “eye droppings”, which can cause the upper and lower eyelids to stick together in severe cases. Chronic conjunctivitis is caused by the extension of acute conjunctivitis that has not been completely cured, and can also be caused by less virulent bacterial infections, allergic conjunctivitis, prolonged overuse of the eyes, and visual fatigue, etc. Symptoms include eye itching, foreign body sensation, burning sensation, dryness, eye stinging pain, and visual fatigue. The secretions are relatively small, mucus-like or white foamy. For the treatment of conjunctivitis, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-allergic eye drops or ointment can be used according to the condition and the nature of the secretion, and acute conjunctivitis patients should be isolated to avoid cross-contamination.
