Is 11.8 white blood cells considered high?

Leukocytes 11.8 x 10^9/L are slightly high in adults, but normal in infants and toddlers 6 months to 2 years of age.

The normal range of leukocytes is (4-10) x 10^9/L in adults, (15-20) x 10^9/L in newborns, and (11-12) x 10^9/L in infants 6 months to 2 years of age.Leukocytes are composed of neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes.

Elevated leukocytes can be caused by both physiologic and pathologic reasons. Elevated leukocytes alone are not effective in diagnosing the disease, but should be considered in conjunction with the proportion of each type of cell and the presence or absence of associated clinical symptoms.

Physiological conditions can cause a mild increase in leukocytes, such as after strenuous exercise, a full meal, cold weather, etc. In addition, emotional excitement can also cause leukocyte elevation.

Pathological causes such as bacterial infection can cause inflammation can cause neutrophils to rise, viral infection can cause lymphocytes to rise, allergic reactions or parasitic infections can also cause eosinophils to rise and so on.

Elevated white blood cells can also be seen in other diseases, such as hematologic diseases, etc., need to be combined with other imaging or laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis, and exclude physiological causes, go to the hospital in a timely manner, to clarify the cause and timely treatment.
