The doctor will initially determine the possible presence of a fatty liver based on medical history, such as having diabetes, hepatitis C, chronic excessive alcohol consumption, or use of hepatotoxic drugs, or an obese body type; he will then prescribe liver function tests to determine the presence of liver damage through the results of various enzymatic tests; and imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to clarify the presence of a fatty liver and to allow some analysis of the amount of fat in the liver to determine whether it is moderate.
