What are the indications for intense pulsed light treatment – facial pigmentation

Common facial pigmentation spots include freckles, sun spots, brownish nevus on cheek and chloasma. They are mostly seen in women and affect the appearance and even psychological health. Although there are many treatment methods, they are difficult to be cured and prone to recurrence. The existing treatments mainly focus on reducing pigmentation, narrowing the scope of pigmentation and reducing recurrence, and at the same time should be safe and have few side effects. The principle of laser treatment for pigmented lesions is that the laser selectively destroys melanin and reshapes the skin. IPL is a broad-spectrum light in the 500nm-1200nm wavelength band, which selectively photothermolyses keratin-forming cells or pigment masses containing more melanin vesicles. IPL has been used clinically for many years to treat facial pigmentation. The advantages of IPL are its efficacy, safety, ease of use and lack of disruption to work, and high patient satisfaction. However, this treatment requires a certain course of treatment in order to obtain more satisfactory results. There are also individual differences in the efficacy of IPL treatment for pigmented spots, with lighter pigmentation being relatively more effective and darker pigmented rashes not being easily removed. Therefore, the doctor should fully communicate with the patient before the treatment. After the treatment, avoiding light and using some pigmentation reducing cosmetics can help to enhance the efficacy.
