How to know if there’s a fishbone in your throat

When a fishbone is lodged in the throat, the discomfort of a foreign body sensation in the throat and sore throat may be felt continuously or intermittently. To confirm the presence of foreign body retention, it is necessary to determine through specialist examination and imaging tests.
1. Specialized examination: Specialists can conduct preliminary screening of the throat through direct vision, indirect laryngoscopy, electronic fiberoptic laryngoscopy, electronic gastroscopy and other intuitive ways, and confirm the existence of foreign body if the fishbone is found to be embedded or retained in the folds of the mucous membrane of the throat, as well as when it is pierced into the mucous membrane tissues and has a severed end on the surface.
2. Imaging examination: If no obvious traces of foreign body are found on the surface, iodine oil X-ray esophagography, oropharyngeal and laryngeal CT and other imaging examinations can be used to further understand the possible presence of foreign body density in the tissue or deep esophagus, and then to investigate the possibility of the presence of fishbone.
Some fish spines are thin and short, so it is not obvious that they have penetrated into the tissues, and they may not show up clearly in routine examinations due to objective reasons, so it is necessary to combine all the information and repeat the examination to get a clear picture. When a fishbone is stuck in the throat, it is recommended to consult a doctor for a systematic examination to make a clear diagnosis.
