Life-prolonging treatments for advanced bile duct cancer

The treatment of advanced bile duct cancer to prolong patients’ life is mainly individualized supportive therapy according to the change of patients’ condition. Such as nutritional support, relieving bile duct obstruction, controlling secondary infection and so on. As patients with advanced cholangiocarcinoma have poorer survival quality and shorter survival period, palliative and supportive treatment is especially important, which aims at improving patients’ life quality and prolonging survival time. 1. Nutritional support: for malnourished patients, enteral nutrition can be performed through oral or transnasal jejunal tube. 2. Improve jaundice and relieve obstruction: patients with advanced cholangiocarcinoma can have malignant obstructive jaundice, which affects liver function, so they should actively carry out biliary stent drainage or percutaneous hepatic puncture biliary drainage to relieve the pressure of bile ducts, improve liver function of patients, and facilitate the absorption of nutrients. 3. Control secondary infection: cholangiocarcinoma can be secondary infection, and cefoperazone, moxifloxacin and so on should be used for anti-infection treatment if secondary infection occurs. 4. Anti-tumor treatment: chemotherapy and targeted therapy should be chosen to control tumor progression, such as cisplatin, lenvatinib, etc., if physical conditions permit. Patients with advanced cholangiocarcinoma have different physical conditions, different treatment methods and different therapeutic effects, so they should actively cooperate with doctors for treatment and take medicines as prescribed by doctors.
