The duration of glucose-lowering effect of glimepiride generally lasts for about 24 hours. Glimepiride can stimulate the pancreatic islet B cells to secrete insulin and enhance the sensitivity of the surrounding tissues to insulin, and can be used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who are unable to control their blood glucose well after weight reduction, diet control and physical exercise. It should not be used by people who are allergic to this drug, other sulfonylurea or sulfonamide drugs, type 1 diabetes, severe hepatic or renal insufficiency, or with ketoacidosis. The duration of action of this drug is usually up to 24 hours after oral administration. Adverse reactions such as hypoglycemia, nausea, vomiting, elevated aminotransferases, urticaria, itching and headache may occur after taking the drug.
