Radix Panax Quinquefolii and Herba Cistanches can be used as traditional Chinese medicines. Radix Panax Quinquefolium is sweet, slightly bitter and slightly cold in nature, with the effects of nourishing yin and clearing the lungs, benefiting the stomach and promoting the production of body fluid. It is used in the treatment of lung-heat and dry cough, blood in sputum, deficiency of gastric yin (insufficient yin fluid in the stomach), and dry throat and thirst caused by fever and fluid injury. It is not suitable to be used with quatrefoil when using Bei Sha Shen. Cistanchis is sweet, salty and warm in nature, with the effects of tonifying kidney yang, benefiting essence and blood, moistening the intestines and relaxing the bowels. It is effective in treating impotence and infertility caused by insufficient kidney yang, deficiency of essence and blood, lumbar and knee soreness, weakness of muscles and bones, and constipation caused by dryness of intestines. It is not recommended for people with yin deficiency and diarrhea. This drug is not suitable for those with solid heat in the intestines and stomach, and constipation with heat knot. Northern Radix Panax Ginseng and Herba Cistanches together have the effects of nourishing yin and generating fluids, tonifying the kidney and benefiting the essence.
