The TCM types of edema are wind-water (sudden edema of the head, face and limbs), water-dampness impregnation, dampness-heat congestion (excessive dampness-heat evil qi stagnating in the body), spleen-yang deficiency (deficiency of yang qi in the spleen), and kidney-yang weakening, and the medication is based on the different types of symptoms. Patients with wind-water interactions show swelling starting from the eyelids, followed by swelling all over the body, which comes on rapidly. The treatment is to remove wind and clear heat, promote lung circulation and promote water circulation, and use Yue Maiden Jiajiu Tang. Patients with water-dampness impregnation show edema of the whole body, shortness of urine, heavy body and no fingers when pressed. The treatment is to strengthen the spleen and eliminate dampness (to strengthen the spleen and get rid of dampness), and to promote Yang and promote diuresis, using Stomach Ling Tang combined with Wu Pi Drink. Dampness-heat congestion is manifested as swelling all over the body, shiny and thin skin, chest tightness and abdominal distension, irritability and heat (irritability and sultriness), thirst, short and red urine (small amount of urine, dark yellow in color), and dryness and knotting of stools. The treatment is to separate dampness and heat, and use Shuo Chisel Drink. Spleen-Yang deficiency is characterized by swelling of the body, worse below the waist, lack of color, fatigue, coldness of the limbs, low food intake, and short urine. The treatment is to warm Yang, strengthen the spleen, dissolve Qi and promote diuresis, and use Solid Spleen Drink. Patients with Kidney-Yang weakening are characterized by swollen face and body, shortness of breath, coldness and soreness in the waist, decreased urine output, and coldness and fatigue (lack of spirit). The treatment is to warm the Kidney and help Yang (warming and tonifying the Yang energy of the Kidney), and to transform Qi and move water (promoting the movement of gas, thus promoting the movement of water and liquid), using Jisheng Kidney Qi Pill and Zhenwu Tang. The adverse effects and contraindications of the above drugs are not clear. If there is a need for medication, it is recommended that it be used under the guidance of a professional physician, and not blindly on its own.
