What are the treatments for severe carotid artery stenosis and which one is better

Common causes of carotid artery stenosis: It is well known that cerebrovascular diseases have been plaguing many middle-aged and elderly people across the country and are characterized by high incidence, disability and mortality rates. Carotid stenosis, as a common cerebrovascular disease, is suffered by many middle-aged and elderly people because of the aging of blood vessels and the deposition of blood lipids at this stage due to the increase in age, which can cause rapid formation of atherosclerotic plaques, thus leading to narrowing of the carotid lumen. Generally speaking, conservative treatment is recommended for mild carotid stenosis, so what are the treatments for severe carotid stenosis and which one is better? Treatment of carotid stenosis: In clinical medical guidelines, severe stenosis of the carotid artery is defined as a degree of stenosis greater than 70%, at which point the patient needs to be treated surgically. There are two types of surgery for carotid stenosis: carotid endarterectomy and carotid stenting intervention. So which of these two procedures is more effective and safer? In fact, the purpose of both procedures is to find the lesion and treat it, but after a large number of case comparisons, carotid stent interventions have some disadvantages during and after surgery, such as the risk of cerebral thrombosis and stent fracture after surgery, and a higher rate of secondary stenosis in patients after surgery. Carotid artery stenosis stripping procedure: Carotid artery endarterectomy is a standard procedure for treating carotid artery stenosis and preventing cerebral infarction, which can well overcome the above problems. Since the first carotid endarterectomy was performed by foreign medical experts in the 1950s, the procedure has been developed and matured over the past 60 to 70 years, and has achieved outstanding clinical results. This technique is a microsurgery, operated under a microscope, and is quite safe and well received by patients.
