Abnormal oral sensations include bitter mouth, dry mouth, sticky mouth, astringent mouth, and sweet mouth. The sticky mouth is thought to be related to dampness and heat, and the patient is usually weak in the spleen and stomach, whose body is slightly fat, has a lot of oil and dirt on the face, and may have frequent and loose stools. The patient’s tongue is usually fat and large, with teeth marks on the sides, white or white greasy tongue coating, weak spleen and stomach or spleen deficiency and dampness trapped manifesting as a sticky mouth. Some patients have damp-heat in the spleen and stomach, often with a yellow, greasy tongue coating and a sticky mouth, and a large, fat tongue. After identifying the cause of the disease, we should make appropriate adjustments. For patients with spleen deficiency and dampness, we can use Ginseng and Atractylodes with patchouli, pelargonium, slippery stone, and zedoary to clear dampness. For patients with damp-heat, Huang Lian and Scutellaria can also be added on top of this. If the stools are sticky and unpleasant, Huang Bai can also be added to clear damp-heat in the lower jiao.
