International Staging Criteria for Chronic Sinusitis and Nasal Polyps

I. Kennedy staging, 1992 Stage 0: normal Stage 1: anatomic variation, unilateral sinus lesion, bilateral lesion confined to the septal sinus Stage 2: bilateral septal sinus lesion with involvement of one subordinate sinus Wang Bing, Department of Otolaryngology, Ning Yang County First People’s Hospital Stage 3: bilateral septal sinus lesion with involvement of two or more subordinate sinuses per side Stage 4: diffuse sinus polyp lesion II. Friedman Staging, 1994 Stage 1: single confined sinus lesion confirmed on CT scan, unilateral or bilateral Stage 2: discontinuous lesion on CT scan, responsive to drug therapy Stage 3: continuous lesion in the septal sinus with or without other sinus turbidity, responsive to drug therapy Stage 4: continuous hyperplastic lesion involving the entire sinus, unresponsive or minimally responsive to drug therapy III. Gliklich Stage 0: normal Stage 1: unilateral sinus lesion or anatomic variation Stage 2: bilateral sinus lesion limited to the septal or maxillary sinuses Stage 3: bilateral sinus lesion with at least pterygoid or frontal sinus involvement Stage 4: total sinusitis Stage 4: Levine’s nasal polyp staging, 1990 Stage 1: nasal polyp confined to the middle nasal tract Stage 2: nasal polyp reaching forward to the anterior part of the middle nasal tract and down to the inferior turbinates, but not obscuring the inferior turbinates Stage 3: nasal polyps were outside the anterior middle turbinate and extended to the medial and posterior middle turbinates Stage 4: nasal polyps extended to the base of the nose, but part of the turbinates could be seen Stage 5: nasal polyps filled the nasal cavity and the turbinates could not be seen V.
